The history of Golden View Condominiums would not be complete without talking about the larger neighbourhood of Sunset Crest in which the building proudly sits above the treetops on the eastern end, near to St. James cemetery.

Envisioned as a holiday village, Sunset Crest had its beginnings in 1966 as a middle class response to Sandy Lane which would offer modest homes to visitors and Barbadians in a resort atmosphere where all needs were catered for.  As a resort, Sunset Crest offered every imaginable amenity and service, all in the idyllic setting of peaceful and friendly Barbados.  Guests loved the Caribbean flair, climate and of course, the magnificent West Coast beaches.

For the savvy investor, Golden View represented an exciting opportunity when one-bedroom units first went on sale in 1970 for the pre-construction price of USD10,000 down and a mortgage for an additional USD10,000.  With commitments from Sunset Crest Rentals Ltd. for what was essentially a guaranteed rental - 18 weeks a year!

Two years later the building was completed and the Condominium Declaration was dated 20 November 1972 and as is typical of condominiums, the sale specifies a specific numbered unit as well as a unit entitlement of 1/120th, reflective of the total number of units in Golden View.  Original purchasers of a condominium unit at Golden View had the option of adding an available furnishing and house keeping package - from beds and linen, to kitchen items and even hangers!*

*Bruce Dodge (Ed.D.), a long time visitor to Barbados, Sunset Crest and in more recent years Golden View, has written a research paper entitled 'Sunset Crest: The Rise, Fall and Rebirth of the Barbados Holiday Village'.  Much of the information above is taken from his paper.  You can download it here for a full read.

You can refer to pages 28-32 for specific information on Golden View Condominiums.  However there is so much interesting information regarding the early history of the entire Resort Development from its inception in the late 1960's to present day that it's worth the full read.
